One Step at a Time: Imitate Me

February 4, 2024

Description:

Virgil’s sermon titled “Imitate Me” emphasizes the importance of imitating Christ and the role of discipleship in the growth of the church. Drawing inspiration from the example of the Apostle Paul, he encourages believers to live lives worthy of imitating as they imitate Christ. He reminds them that discipling others is the responsibility of every believer and reassures the listener that Jesus wants to use them despite their imperfections and inexperience. He further challenges them to live in a way that reflects Christ, inviting others to follow them as they follow Christ.

In light of this week’s message, we encourage you to consider these questions and dig in a little deeper with your personal study, with your family, or with your small group.

  1. Get to know you Question: When you were growing up who was the person, real or fictitious, that you most wanted to imitate and why?
  2. Read Matthew 28:18-20 How is ongoing discipleship part of the great commission?  Why is this type of discipleship important for the growth of the church and the spread of the Gospel? How can you personally help those around you to grow in their faith?
  3. Read 1 Corinthians 10:33-11:1 and Philippians 3:17. In the teaching, this Big Idea was emphasized: “If you want to know what living and loving Jesus looks like, then imitate me.”  What caused Paul to be able to make that claim? Can you make that statement about yourself with confidence?  What intimidates you about saying “Imitate me”?
  4. Read 1 Timothy 4:12-13 In what ways did Paul tell Timothy to set an example?  What are some practical ways that we can live out being examples in these areas?
  5. Read Philippians 4:8-9 What are some of the things that you have learned, heard, seen, or received from spiritual leaders that you have been able to imitate and you now want others to imitate in you?
  6. Read Titus 2:1 and 2:15 (Read all of chapter 2 if time allows) How can believers reflect Christ’s teachings in our everyday actions to guide others?  What are some changes you could make in your own life to better reflect Christ’s teachings and be a positive example for others?

One Step at a Time: Step 3

January 28, 2024

Description:

As we continue to journey through the 4 chairs of discipleship, this sermon, “One Step at a Time: Step 3,” focuses on the process of discipleship as we grow into the selfless serving “young adult” stage of our Christian walk. In this stage, we look to Jesus as he trains up his disciples. Peter, one of those disciples, challenges us to likewise use God’s gifts to serve one another in love.

In light of this week’s message, we encourage you to consider these questions and dig in a little deeper with your personal study, with your family, or with your small group.

  1. (Icebreaker) What was the biggest eye-opening reality in life when you lived on your own for the first time as a young adult or first got married?
  2. Do you think selfishness vs. selflessness is a good metric for maturity in your Christian walk? Why or why not? What is an example of selfish serving vs. selfless serving of others?
  3. Sunday’s big question was “What am I primarily focused on?” Are there good things in your life that you are focused on that might keep you from focusing on the greater things?
  4. Read Acts 17:10-12. One of the marks of selfless living is (spiritually speaking) the ability to feed yourself.  How did the Bereans demonstrate this?  How should we be demonstrating this?
  5. Read 1 Peter 4:7-10. What are examples of the gifts that God has given people? What is your gift and are you using it to serve others?
  6. What is one area where selfishness is still winning in your life? What is one way you can serve that could be the antidote to this selfish struggle?

One Step at a Time: Step 2

January 21, 2024

Description:

The sermon, “One Step at a Time: Step 2,” focuses on becoming a believer and the process of discipleship in this “newborn” state of Christianity.  We see the necessity of a disciple’s journey learning to grow in their walk with Jesus where we move from being a fan to follower, from selfish to selfless, and information to application.  We see a model of dependence on the Holy Spirit, obedience, and intentional relationships. Through the teaching of Jesus, we are encouraged to grow as new believers and help others do the same.

In light of this week’s message, we encourage you to consider these questions and dig in a little deeper with your personal study, with your family, or with your small group.

  1. (Icebreaker) What is one thing you still enjoy doing that is childlike?
  2. Who has been the greatest mentor in your life?  What type of impact does having someone intentionally guiding you in your life toward Jesus make?
  3. Read Matthew 4:18-22. What stands out to you about these passages?
  4. Read Mark 10:35-45. Even as the disciples were growing in their following of Jesus, how did this childlike selfishness still impact their perspective? What was the antidote that Jesus gave for the self-focus the disciples had?
  5. What aspects of your spiritual life are you needing to grow up in? Do you have a mentor or are you willing to mentor another young believer? If in a group, talk and then pray about those who need a mentor and those willing to mentor one another.

One Step at a Time: Step 1

January 14, 2024

Description:

In this sermon “One Step at a Time – Step 1,” the focus is on discipleship and the importance of following Jesus’ example to “Come and see.” The sermon explores the biblical stories of John the Baptist and his disciples, as well as the calling of Andrew and Simon. It emphasizes the need to actively make, mature, and multiply disciples, and highlights the significance of sharing the message of Jesus with others. The main takeaway is that being a disciple means not only following Jesus but also guiding others in their journey with Him starting with an invite to “come and see.”

In light of this week’s message, we encourage you to consider these questions and dig in a little deeper with your personal study, with your family, or with your small group.

  1. (Ice breaker) Who was the first person to share Jesus with you?  How did they do it?
  2. Based on Matthew 4:19, what does it mean to ‘fish for people’?  Who was responsible for this “fishing?”
  3. What can we learn from the example of Andrew and Simon in the story of the invitation to come and see?
  4. Why is sharing the message of Jesus with others important, according to Romans 10:14? Why does “loving without sharing” end up not being the most loving thing to do.
  5. How can we apply 1 John 2:6, which states that those who claim to live in God should live their lives as Jesus did, to our lives?  Who is the one you are discipling like Jesus and/or who is disciplining you like Jesus did?

One at a Time: One Person at a Time

January 7, 2024

Description:

The sermon titled “One Person at a Time” reflects on how Jesus changed the world by focusing on individuals. Jesus, though humble and without social status, reshaped history by valuing each person he encountered. This sermon encourages listeners to adopt Jesus’ perspective, see individuals, and reach out to those who may feel lost or overlooked.

In light of this week’s message, we encourage you to consider these questions and dig in a little deeper with your personal study, with your family, or with your small group.

  1. (Ice breaker) When have you ever felt insignificant or overlooked?
  2. Why is it important for the church to be a place of love, and celebration for those who are (far or away) from God or perhaps returning to God?
  3. Read Luke 15:1-2. What is the significance of both the perspective of the “religious” leaders of sinners and Jesus’ reputation mentioned here?
  4. Read Luke 15:3-7.  In this story of the lost sheep, why do you think Jesus chose to celebrate the one sheep that was found over the ninety-nine that were never lost?
  5. How does focusing on one person at a time, like Jesus did, change our approach to relationships and ministry?
